Excel Import/Export - Unable to cast COM object of type

Modified on Thu, 22 Feb, 2024 at 4:56 PM

This is usually due to a downgrade of office or an upgrade of an office product other than Excel.
Microsoft set registry entries for all office products when installing any office product and do not remove these registry entries when uninstalling.
So when another program goes to use them they are referencing an Excel version which is not present.

Are you able to try repairing the Office install first.
  1. Open the windows start menu and type ‘Add or Remove Programs’ and open this settings app.

  1. Scroll to ‘Microsoft 365’, click the […] and select ‘Modify’

  1. Click Quick Repair on the following form

  1. After it completes, try to import/export again.

If this does not work, try the following.
The following link shows how to correct the registry references (though please note it would be better to get your IT team to look at this if you have one).
NOTE: Make sure to make a backup of the registry before making any changes
NOTE: It references a different GUID, change the GUID in step 2, to that in your error message

Steps 2 - 7
